2007-10-11: Using the Substitute Program
Posted By: Lindsey Gregory Tyner
Here are some tips to make your experience finding and using a BNI Substitute successful:
Develop a “Qualified Substitute List” by contacting coworkers, associates and business people who could benefit from joining your Chapter.
When searching for a sub, the first step should be to look through your contacts for potential visitors who could join your Chapter. Asking them to sub for you will give them an opportunity to experience what BNI is all about.
A sub who doesn't belong to BNI will, on average, do business worth about $1,000 with Chapter members during six months following their visit.
BNI members from other Chapters who might be willing to “sub” for you are a fall-back if you can't find someone from outside BNI. The Members Only section of BNIDFW.com allows you to search for willing substitutes from other Chapters.
Prepare your substitute by giving them your :60 second, a map and directions to the location of your meeting, and the name of your Chapter President.
Build value for your sub: coach them in delivering their own :60 so they can get the word about about their business.
As soon as you’ve schedule your vacation or business trip, start contacting your list to determine who is willing and able to commit to the meeting.
Be a willing substitute yourself: Remember, Giver’s Gain!
Call and/or email your sub the day before to answer any last-minute questions.
